PostSubject: The Gala at McAllister Tech   Sun Mar 04, 2018 8:36 pm

The Gala hall in the McAllister Tech building was decorated immaculately, Nice dressed people were shuffling about drinking wine and eating light foods while waiting for the main event to begin. The main event of the evening being the showcase of some artwork that the company had secured in a mission overseas that was being donated to the local museum. The CEO of McAllister Tech had just arrived in a limo out front and had made his way inside. Oliver McAllister made his way through the crowd with practiced ease. He had been doing this sort of thing for a long time, so he had no trouble with it by now. As he walked through the crowd however, the man was looking for one person in particular that he had personally sent an invitation to. A woman who he was extremely attracted to, Sarah Silver. But, as he had yet to see her, he would make his way up onto a stage in the center of the hall to give his opening speech. Holding a glass of white wine, he would raise his hand to quiet the crowd. The wealthiest man in New York certainly had a presence about him. "Good evening esteemed guests. I welcome you to our Fundraising Gala and the grand unveiling of out art piece that we will be donating the the New York Museum of Historical Art. I wish to thank all of you for coming personally, and McAllister Tech thanks you for all of your charitable donations from the bottom of our hearts. Enjoy your night everyone!" He would then give a slight raise of his glass and would then head out to mingle with his guests. Still on the watch out for that special woman.

Shane squirmed slightly at the uncomfortable feeling of so many people surrounding him and fiddled with the rose on his lapel. The college student was dressed in a white tux with a black button-up, and was being eyed both for the unusual appearance of someone of his age at a gala like this and because of the fact he was escorting a slightly older woman inside. His silver-bronze eyes flashed behind his glasses at someone's comment before the woman on his arm placed her hand on his shoulder. They were about to walk in, and it was a subtle enough reminder to behave. Sarah had already given him one of her knowing looks when he got into the limousine that had just dropped them off, since she had seen the telltale shuffle only she could notice that meant he was armed.

Honestly, his cousin asking him if he would accompany her to a social event wasn't as much of a surprise as the fact that it WASN'T work-related. She was a reporter for the local news, and the fact that McAllister Tech was hosting a gala was a big hit. Sarah, however, had taken the evening off because she had been given an invite personally by the enigmatic CEO of the company. He was just there as a plus one.

Making their way into the main hall and snagging a couple of glasses of wine, the two caught the toast being made by Oliver McAllister himself. The redheaded beauty at his side suddenly gripped his forearm and dragged him through the crowd. Hell, if it weren't for Shane's spectacular reaction speed he probably would have spilled red wine all over his clothing. As it stood, he just felt lucky no one had seen the slight adjustment he made. Coming to a stop, the white haired young man noticed Sarah waving over the richest man in New York. Curious...

Almost as soon as he had stepped down onto the main floor, his eyes picked up the sight of his red headed love interest. She was looking as extravagant as always, wearing a sparkling silver dress. She was being escorted, or really, she was dragging behind her a young boy with snowy white hair and glasses. Oliver immediately analysed the boy with high scrutiny, looking at the way he dressed and how he seemed to be pulled easily, but kept his body under control so well. He also noticed the shifting of the boys clothes, indicating he was concealing something within them. Given the usual things people these days concealed, he assumed it was a weapon of some sort, most likely a firearm. But, he also had armed guards and he had faith in Sarah's judgment of people, so he saw no problem. This analysis happened in a fraction of a second, and he moved to meet up with the unusual pair. "Sarah, it is good to see you got my invitation!" He would say as they hugged and she gave him a kiss on the cheek, in a friendly manner. "Who is this young lad escorting you? I don't believe I have met him before." He would hold his hand out to Shane in the typical handshake fashion. "Oliver McAllister, It is a pleasure to meet you. I trust you are enjoying the Gala?" It would be interesting to meet the boy, judging by some subtle similarities in their physical characteristics, he could make an assumption that they were somewhat related, but this would not be possible to prove through sight alone, so he chose not to comment about it. He also made a mental note to keep an eye on the boy, just to be safe. Since he suspected him of carrying a weapon in the middle of a Gala.

Shane stood dumbfounded as Oliver Fucking McAllister came up to them and greeted his cousin in a friendly manner, a greeting that Sarah was all too willing to return. Judging from her body language, she had a certain fondness for the business tycoon, and it might be returned if the look in the man's eye was anything to go by. Gripping the other man's hand in a firm handshake, careful not to exert too much strength, Shane would greet the older man in a friendly manner. "Shane Wolfe, and likewise. The party is rather...interesting. Such a large room, and yet so many people are crammed into it that it feels small. Strangers running around, acting like the best of friends while forming social alliances for their own ends, some even looking for a pretty woman to go home with...It's actually a bit overwhelming!"

Oliver would no doubt recognize his family name, as his father was widely regarded as one of the smartest people to have ever lived. Even if Adam Wolfe was not as famous in the technological industry as he had been before his death, the family itself stretched back hundreds of years and had the wealth to prove it. Not quite as much as his own, of course, but it was old money.

Giggling in an almost-girlish manner, Sarah would pipe in before either Oliver or Shane could continue their conversation. "Shane is my little cousin on his mother's side. I took him and his sister in after the unpleasantness had settled and raised them. I hope you don't mind that I brought him. He really needs to get out more, sometimes."

Shane, for his part, groaned at Sarah's observation and blinked sharply at a pain in his right wrist, sighing as it went away after about a second. He noticed the look she gave him, and tried to brush it off. She needed to enjoy herself instead of worrying about him having an attack. If push came to shove, he had his painkillers in his pocket, hidden in a small pillbox that contained about a day's worth of Percocet. Of course, a bad day for him normally meant enough that it would make a Mexican drug lord jealous, or at least it felt like it sometimes...

Oliver returned the handshake with equivalent force that he felt, which he had to admit surprised him a bit, the boy didn't seem as strong as he felt. But, it was irrelevant at the moment. Wolfe. The boy, Shane's, surname. It was familiar to him, though he couldn't place it until he heard Sarah's brief explanation. This boy was the son of Adam Wolfe. He had only known the man in passing somewhat, though he did admire the advancements into the technological world the man had brought about. Almost enough to overtake all of McAllister Tech's competitors on his lonesome. The man was definitely a once in a generation genius. Listening as Sarah spoke Oliver would chuckle some, "Sarah, you know, not everyone is suited for venues such as this. Especially if they tend to avoid going out in the first place. The only reason I am here is because the Board is twisting my arm." Looking back to Shane, he had to commend the boy for making the observations that he had in the brief time they had been in the room. "Yes, it is hardly a room full of honest business people, but they are our biggest donors, so it's best to keep them happy. So, what do you do, Shane? Still in school, or working somewhere perhaps?" It was only polite to find out more about the person you had just met, Looking to Sarah, He would motion towards the city mayor and police commissioner speaking with the governor. "I am sure your station will not forgive you should you be here without getting them some form of scoop. So, I took the liberty of inviting some "Scoop-worthy" guests. Go ahead and get a quick interview, I shall entertain your cousin while you are away." She she would no doubt jump at the opportunity granted to her, Oliver would motion for Shane to follow him to the minibar. Once they were somewhat alone and out of earshot, Oliver would speak to the boy, "You know, a gala is not usually the place one would carry a concealed weapon. Especially one in such a secure location with armed guards. So, why did you feel the need?" He wanted to make sure the boy posed no threat to not only the people there but to Sarah as well. They may be cousins, but he has seen some shit in his lifetime, brother turning on brother, cousin on cousin. The Civil War was a brutal time in his life, he thought of it all too often.

Shane chuckled at Oliver's remark that he'd rather be elsewhere, and the honest response to his observations. Normally a famous businessman wouldn't speak in such a manner, but it seemed that the older man was an exception. Looking at him with an appraising eye when he asked about his occupation, Shane figured it wouldn't hurt anything to make a new friend. "I'm currently a student, but I figure I'll probably end up following my father."

When Oliver suggested that Sarah go listen to the local rumors, the reporter side of her personality seemed to take over instantly and without warning. Sparing him only a glance to make sure he was okay, she would promise to be back a bit later and slipped away into the crowd. Shrugging, Shane followed Oliver over to a minibar. Grabbing a Coke and leaving a couple of dollars for the servants as a tip, since he'd rather avoid too much alcohol and keep his wits about him, Shane listened as the older man immediately deduced that he was carrying a weapon on his person. Considering he had been very gracious, and he was in charge of the entire affair, Shane would answer honestly.

"I'm surprised you noticed that I'm armed. I try to keep it under wraps as much as possible. I know that a gala isn't normally a place where anything wrong might happen, but you never know. I don't like gambling my family's safety, especially since Riley and I only have Sarah and each other. Regardless, I don't like leaving it at home anyway. After all, the Wolf Moon is my father's crowning achievement, and he left the only complete model to me in his will. I've had to deal with the government trying to take it and his rivals attempting to steal it since I was six or seven. It's a piece of him, you know?"

Was Shane sentimental towards his handgun? Yes, and with good reason. The Wolf Moon was a legend in the tech industry, and most people thought that when Adam Wolfe died so too did his research. While Shane did have his father's research notes, it was difficult to sort through all of them and figure out what lead to what. Just because the son had inherited the mind of the father did not mean that the father's experience was not greater.

Shane would then follow up with a very measured question or two, once that might shock the older man. "I saw how you looked at Sarah, and I won't threaten you or bluster in some misguided attempt to protect her. She's been an adult for as long as I've known her, even if she's more of an older sister figure than a mother. She can handle herself, and having something other than family in her life would be good for her. I do, however, have something I'm curious about. I've become an expert at hiding when I'm carrying a concealed weapon, even one as heavy as the Wolf Moon. Not only that, but the grip in your handshake was much lighter before you matched my own, almost as if you were attempting to measure how much strength you put into it, and were surprised at the strength in my own grip. How is it that you managed to spot something only Sarah's ever been able to see, and be able to have so much control over your own body?"

Shane's reasoning behind carrying the weapon were understandable. Although carrying a weapon wasn't typically allowed, he supposed he would make an exception for the boy. Then, listening to the boy make his own subtle deductions, Oliver was impressed with his deductive skills. Noticing how he was able to pick up on the subtleties of a concealed weapon and able to measure his grip so surely. "Ah, you noticed that did you? Well, not many people know this, but I am actually a veteran. I went through extensive training in recognizing potential threats and am a bit of a gym rat if I am to be honest with myself, so I sometimes squeeze too hard. But, from what I felt, you could handle my full might, so kudos to you!" Hiding as much as he could within an intricately woven web of lies, intermingled with specks of truth.

He had fought many wars and even more battles. Through his time in combat he had been trained both through various mentors and experiences, to identify and assess various threats upon entering a room. It was nothing less than he had done tonight. He himself, had left his weapons and such in his armory far below the building they were currently in. But, if he were to be honest with himself, the weapons were merely another way to limit himself in battle as the weapons he had couldn't do as much damage as he could. But, even with somewhat weaker weapons, his personal skills and attributes left plenty to be desired from his time in battle. "Don't worry, I won't tell the guards." Recalling what Shane had said earlier, about being a potential inventor, Oliver would clasp him on the shoulder, "Well, If you ever get to the inventing point, I would be more than happy to offer you a job. Of course, someone of your potential talents would be working with me directly." He had to admit, there was just something off about the boy and he couldn't put his finger on it. He had never felt this from anyone, it was an odd sensation that had never shown itself to him in over two centuries of life.

Smiling at the understanding nature of the man before him, Shane would not and take another sip of his Coke, only to nearly do a spit-take at the offer of a job. Employment working directly under Oliver McAllister was every nerd's dream! Before he could respond, however, the younger of the two noticed something brewing over by his cousin. Looking over, he could see that the city's mayor had just gotten some bad news from the governor, and tensions were running high. Sarah, of course, was scribbling furiously into her notebook, and was seemingly unaware of the potential for violence. Frowning slightly, Shane would catch only a glimpse of the grip of a handgun, a Glock if he was seeing correctly, before the mayor's hand blocked it in the worst way possible. Silver-bronze eyes flashing, the young man would burst into motion the moment the trigger was pulled, knowing that no one else would be able to react fast enough with the proximity. Moving through the throng of people screaming was a chore, and a few of them might find themselves displaced subtly in the next second, but it didn't matter.

The police commissioner tackled the mayor to the ground while Sarah stared on in shock before looking first to make sure the government was okay, then turning to look at her cousin, still standing by the minibar with Oliver as if he hadn't moved a muscle. At least, that's what most people would assume. Moving past the panicking folks being corralled away from the scene by security while the issue was being dealt with, Sarah would walk up to Shane and Oliver with a nearly unreadable expression on her face. Looking her cousin directly in the eye, a feat considering the fact that his growth spurt in high school had seen him grow to 6'1" with 172 pounds of lean muscle, the reporter would hold out her hand. "Come on, Shane. Give it to me. No one else in this entire building could have stopped what happened."

Sighing, as he knew he had probably just blown his cover, the college student pulled his hand out of his pocket and dropped a deformed chunk of lead into his cousin's hand. It was clearly a .357 round, and Oliver would be able to tell that it had apparently struck something it couldn't pass through from the way it flattened. Giving the other two a sheepish smile, Shane would scratch the back of his head and apologize, even unknowingly slipping in the nickname he and Riley had given their guardian when they were little. "Sorry, Sae. I guess I blew it, didn't I? Um, Oliver, can we trust you with this? It's a bit of an awkward story, but I can give you an explanation if you want."

Seeing a flash of excitement in the boy's eyes upon hearing the offer for a job, Oliver would smile. He was glad that the boy viewed the offer in a positive light. He was about to inquire about his interest when a few things happened, almost simultaneously. first, He heard the conversation between the mayor and the governor, he could hear the sound of fingers clasping on the metal of a gun. Next, he saw Shane's eyes move at an insanely fast speed, for a normal human, or even most mutants, to look in that direction, meaning he had noticed something too. And then, before Oliver had turned around as he was a bit more surprised at having missed the gun the Mayor was carrying and the fact that the boy that he was just talking to had started moving at very high speeds through the crowd in that direction. Oliver decided to play this calmly, as Shane seemed to know what he was doing.

Upon his return many things happened. Oliver was giving him an appraising eye when Sarah approached and made it quite obvious she had known what happened, even if she couldn't have seen it. Shane proceeded to drop a bullet into her hand that had obviously impacted something hard. This case, led Oliver to believe it was Shane's hand. The boy in question then apologized and then looked to him asking if he could keep a secret and that he could explain. Of course, no explanation was needed. "Don't worry about it, no explanation needed. You are a mutant. I had my suspicions but seeing you in action just now proved me correct. I suppose since I know of your little secret I might as well let you in on one of mine. I am also a mutant, which is how I was able to see your little act of heroics. Which, I thank you for very much. Perhaps, now would be a good time for proper introductions then." He would then hold his hand back out in a handshake fashion and when/if Shane returned the clasp, he would match whatever amount of force the other boy put in exactly. Once the boy finished exploring some of his strength, he would take a step back. "Well, now my offer of a job will include a bit of extracurricular activity as well. If you were to accept, that is?" He left the question open, he wondered what the boys response would be, it would help him with his experience in his powers and his inventions being able to use the most advanced facilities in the world.

Shane's eyes widened slightly and a lazy grin showed up on his face as he gripped the other man's hand, slowly increasing the strength within the grip until it would shatter marble. Getting excited by the fact that Oliver matched his grip fairly easily, he let go on his self-imposed control a little, and gripped it as hard as he'd ever experimented with, hard enough that he'd caused a stage four earthquake when he'd punched the ground back in high school. When the older man matched even that, a light began shining beneath his glasses as his eyes glittered with joy. This could be a lot of fun, especially considering he needed a teacher anyway. The couple of government doctors they had spoken to hadn't been able to help, and had nearly forced him to join their little program when he was eight. Considering what his powers entailed, that would have been devastating for the future of warfare and the world. "I accept your offer, Mr. McAllister. When should I start?"

Sarah smiled and excused herself to go and call the limousine. As she walked around the corner, her smile turned a bit more smug. With Shane having found someone who could possibly train him, there was no more need for her to worry about it. She had known her little cousin's powers outclassed her own, and from the tension in his arm she could see that Oliver's own likely did as well. Now that she didn't have to bother trying to figure out who could keep Shane in line, she could go along with her own plans...

Now that the boy had accepted, he had much to prepare. The danger room in his 'office' would be able to handle a majority of his training, and the tech he had available would be able to outfit the boy in basically anything he could want or need. Thinking when he would be able to get this done by, he made a decision. "Good. Report to my office as soon as you are done with classes for the day, tomorrow. We will begin your orientation there." With that, he realized he was still at a gala and needed to get back into business mode. "Thank you both for stopping by, I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow, and tell your cousin to expect a call from me in the coming week. Now, excuse me, but I have to get back to my other, less interesting guests. Thanks again for your action tonight, you might have saved me a bit more paper work and bad press." With a light wave, the business tycoon would be swept back into the crowd, checking up on everyone and then making his way to speak with the commissioner to find out what the hell had happened exactly. He would then unveil the artwork which some nutbar bought for 5.2 Billion Cubes. But, that was neither here nor there. It was time to go prepare for his first official team training tomorrow.
